At Maddie & Mark's we try to never miss an opportunity to recycle. We recycle all our cardboard, shoe boxes, tissue paper, plastic and paper as a matter of course, but what was really breaking our hearts was seeing shoes that were outgrown but still had some life in them being thrown away. We really wanted to find a way to reuse them and have been delighted to find a recycling company and a local charity that we are proud to support. Nathan Wastesavers
Nathan's was established in 1903 and they have been recycling textiles and clothing for many years. They work closely with charities, local councils, schools, businesses and community groups to recycle over 400,000 kilograms every week! The shoes that you donate are either sent off to developing countries or, if they aren’t in good enough condition to be reworn, then they are stripped down and their materials recycled. They could end up even as the wiper blades on your car! For this reason we always say that no matter what state the shoes are if you are willing to donate them, we will always accept them on Nathan’s behalf.

500 Miles is a local charity that supports amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia. Their particular focus is the delivery and development of prosthetic and orthotic services. We select the shoes that you donate that are in the best condition and 500 Miles then sends them off to Africa so that the children there can use them with their new prosthetic limbs.

The charity Link Romania was started in the UK in 1991 as a direct result of the humanitarian crisis in Romania. They exist to provide the funding to support current projects based mainly in Romania, but also in Albania and Moldova. Maddie & Mark's work with them every year for their Christmas shoebox appeal. Customers can come into the shop and pick up an empty shoebox which they then fill with items that they want to donate. They then drop shoebox back into one of our shops and we pass it on to the charity.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of tissue paper, cardboard, empty shoe boxes, packaging and plastic bags that a busy shoe shop can generate in a week! Leep Recycling is the award-winning recycling company based in Edinburgh that we depend on to help us do our bit to save the environment.
